FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The Sacred Heart University women's bowling team hosted NEC foe LIU for its season opener on Saturday. The Sharks came out on top in two of the three matches.
In the opening five baker set of the day, LIU dominated the pinfall with a final score of 929-859 (181-232, 168-164, 159-197, 200-163, 151-173). This style of play is where each team has five bowlers who are responsible for two nonconsecutive frames. The Pioneers garnered two wins and had the only game to tally 200 points.
The second match was traditional play, which the Sharks outscored the Pioneers, 948-915. Sophomore Nicole Cona led the pinfall with a score of 204, followed by senior Rachel Bamford (189), first-year Kayla Perez (184), first-year Paige Donovan with a score of 172 and senior Colby Jones racking up 166 points.
In the final head-to-head, the teams competed in another baker set, where SHU avoided the shutout with a winning score of 989-960 (183-180, 190-149, 199-204, 234-174, 183-253). SHU led the pinfall in three of the games.
The Pioneers hit the road for a three-day tournament at the NJ Northeast Classic on Feb. 6-7.
