The #13 Sacred Heart University women's bowling team went 2-1 on the first day of the NEC Meet 3 in Stratford, N.J. The Pioneers improve to 49-33 on the year and 10-5 in league play. With three matches remaining in the NEC regular season, the Pioneers are in third place and have clinched a berth in the NEC Tournament, March 20-22.
The NEC competition wraps-up Sunday morning, with the Pioneers taking on #10 Duquesne, St. Francis U and St. Francis Brooklyn. The format of this weekend's competition is best-of-seven baker matches.
Match 1 (SHU 4, FDU 1)
- The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 204-140 and 209-182 victories to open the competition
- FDU won the lowest scoring game of the match, 160-148
- SHU rebounded in game four with a 212-157 win and clinched the win with a 187-173 fifth-game victory
Match 2 (Mount St. Mary's 4, SHU 2)
- SHU opened with a game-one win, 191-156
- Mount notched its best score of the day in game two, winning 277-172
- The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead, bowling is on 277, win a 121-pin margin win
- Mount won the next three, with a close fought, 190-187 win in the fifth and a 268-171 victory in the sixth game
Match 3 (SHU 4, LIU 3)
- The Pioneers again opened with a win, 207-191
- LIU outscored SHU 236-222 to even the match and took a 2-1 lead with a 194-176 victory in the third
- SHU won in game four and five, 193-169 and 226-187
- The Sharks evened the match with a 215-177 win in the sixth
- The Pioneers notched a score of 222 in the decisive seventh game, good for a 15-pin margin of victory
