Rhodes Named to All-Tournament Team as Pioneers Take Second Place

READING, PA (FEBRUARY 14, 2016)—The Sacred Heart bowling team finished second at the Golden Bear Classic this weekend in Reading, Pa. behind Northeast Conference rival St. Francis Brooklyn. The Pioneers went 11-3 for the weekend with a total pinfall of 10,086 to enter Sunday's matchplay as the top seed. After downing Kutztown and Salem in the first two rounds, the Pioneers fell in a seven-game battle against the Terriers. Sarah Rhodes earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team with a 19.61 frame average, as well as a 196 game average for the weekend.  Corrine Maher followed closely behind Rhodes averaging a 194.

The Pioneers will head down to Wallingford, Conn. in March for their next match at the NEC Spring Meet.

 

Day One (Baker Matches)

Rhodes led average Friday with a 21.00 frame average. Sarah Morris was 20.75 and Tyrrell was 20.25. Rhodes led striking on the team with 52% shots being strikes.

Match 1:

  • SHU 898- Daemon 771
  • In her debut in NCAA matches, sophomore Morris led the team tossing 7 out of 10 strikes for 254 for the ten frames
  • Maher also had a good performance striking 6 of 10 shots for 213.
 

Match 2:

  • Felician 1008- SHU 946 
  • Dominique Newton came off the bench for her NCAA match debut to led the team with a 212 for the ten frames including four strikes in a row
 

Match 3:

  • SHU 911- Franklin Pierce 821
  •  Morris again led the team with 222 for the ten frames including 6 strikes
 

Match 4:

  • SHU-967- Morgan State 794
  • After their equipment arrived late, starters Tyrrell and Rhodes jumped back into the line up to be the only two over 200 for the match
 

Match 5:

  • SHU 957- Salem 598
  • Rhodes took over the anchor spot and shot 204 for the ten frames
 

Day Two (Traditional Matches)

Maher was the only bowler who averaged over 200 for the day. She had a 20.14 frame average.

Match 1:

  • SHU 826- Saint Peters U 819
  • Tyrrell took charge staring the day in the anchor spot.  She shot 243 for the ten frames

Match 2:

  • Saint Francis Brooklyn 891- SHU 880
  • Rhodes was high with 201 for the match
  • Two of the match starters struggled so subs were put in, but the team fell 11 pins short in the match
 

Match 3:

  • SHU 822- NJCU 671
  • Tyrrell was high with 199 for the match
 
 

Match 4:

  • SHU 975- Mount Aloysius 924
  • Three of the four starters shot in the 190's with Maher's 198 being the high game. She filled each of the ten frames with a strike or a spare for a clean match game
 

Match 5:

  • SHU 1013- Kutztown 1009
  • This was the Pioneers best performance on Friday or Saturday
  • Jayna Tartaglia had ten clean frames including 6 of 10 strikes for a 233
  • Lauren Hoffman shot the other 200 with 202
  • Rhodes added 192, Maher 190 and Tyrrell 184
 

Match 6:

  • SHU 946- Caldwell 885
  • Maher led with 223 for the ten frames while Hoffman added a 202
 

Day Three (Best 4 of 7 Baker)

Round 1:

  • SHU 4- Kutztown 2
  • Tartaglia threw 9 of 12 strikes for a 22.7 frame average
  • Rhodes led with a 23.3 frame average, while Maher had a 22.6 frame average
  • Rhodes and Maher threw 7 of 12 strikes
 

Round 2:

  • SHU 4.5- Salem 1.5
  • Maher had the best performance in this match and took over the anchor position mid way through the match
  • She filled all 12 frames for a 23.5 frame average.
  • After a slow start, Tartaglia ended with 7 of the last 8 strikes
 

Round 3:

  • Saint Francis Brooklyn 4- SHU 3
  • The Pioneers fell short in round three to Saint Francis Brooklyn causing them to end the weekend in 2nd place
  • Maher was the only player who was plus for the match averaging 20.3 per frame and throwing 8 of 14 strikes
  • The team had less pocket presence which led to less strikes and up and down scores
