SHU Bowling Finishes 17th at UMES Hawk Classic

MILLSBORO, DE — The Sacred Heart bowling team went into this weekend after being ranked 15th in the National Tenpin Coaches Association November Poll, but the Pioneers finished in 17th at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawk Classic.

They ended they day Friday in 16th place with a total pinfall of 5,059 and record of 1-5. Saturday they moved up a spot to 15th place with a record of 3-9 and total pinfall of 10,394. On their last day they played three rounds of the bracket, finishing the weekend in 17th place.

After winter break, Sacred Heart opens the spring semester in Reading, Pa. at the Kutztown Golden Bear Invitational January 22-24.

 

Day One (Baker Matches)

Match 1:

  • Monmouth 959- SHU 906
 

Match 2:

  •  Howard 894- SHU 781
 

Match 3:

  •   Sam Houston State University 1014- SHU 778
 

Match 4:

  •  Maryland University of Eastern Shore 993- SHU 863
 

Match 5:

  •  Morgan State 828- SHU 778
 

Match 6:

  •  SHU 953- Howard 922
 

Day Two (Traditional Matches)

Match 1:

  •  Norfolk State University 997- SHU 997 TIE
  •  Three Pioneers scored above 200: Amanda Tyrell 240, Sarah Rhodes 226, and Lauren Hoffman 202
 

Match 2:

  •  SHU 832- Coppin State 711
  • Corrine Maher led the Pioneers with a 185 game.  
 

Match 3:

  •  Tulane 913-SHU 912
  •  Tyrell had the high game bowling a 215.
 

Match 4:

  •  Vanderbilt 963- SHU 929
  •  Hoffman had the highest game bowling a 209.
 

Match 5:

  •  Delaware State University 972- SHU 819
  •  Tyrell and Hoffman bowled a 171 game leading the Pioneers.
 

Match 6:

  •  Kutztown University 890- SHU 846
  •  Tyrell and Hoffman led the Pioneers both bowling a 184 game.
 

Final Day (Bracket)

Round 1:

  • The Pioneers entered the bracket seeded 15th taking on 16th seed Howard in the first round
  • SHU took the first game of the baker style best-of-seven match 214-190.
  • Sacred Heart dropped the second match 167-151 starting the back-and-forth action as the teams exchanged wins forcing a decisive game seven
  • In the narrowest of victories, Howard edged out SHU 187-185 knocking the Pioneers down in the bracket
 

Round 2:

  • SHU took on No. 18 Morgan State, who had just beaten Franklin Pierce in seven games, in the next round
  • The teams traded wins in the first two games with the Bears taking the first game 192-175 and Sacred Heart winning the next 164-125
  • Morgan State took the next two games 199-153 and 178-167, before SHU used a 225-174 win to keep the match alive
  • The Bears ended it in six games though, winning the final game 202-160
 

Round 3:

  • Dropping again in the bracket, SHU faced Franklin Pierce to decide which team took 17th and 18th place
  • The Pioneers dominated, sweeping the match with four wins: 197-178, 201-135, 192-126 and 196-137
