WALLINGFORD, CONN. (October 24, 2015)—Sacred Heart junior Abby Rossi won the singles event as the SHU women's bowling team finished second at the SHU Bowl for a Cure Invitational Saturday. Amanda Tyrrell (1045), Lauren Hoffman (1026) and Jayna Tartaglia (800) finished third, fourth and fifth respectively in the overall individual standings earning them spots on the All-Tournament Team.
The Pioneers finished first in total pinfall (4,801) and 3-1, only losing to Kutztown. Unfortunately, that loss was the tiebreaker as the Golden Bears also finished 3-1.
Team Tournament:
Match 1:
- SHU 987 - Franklin Pierce 874
- Tyrrell led the Pioneers with a 228 game. Hoffman was right behind her shooting 227
Match 2:
- SHU 962 - Caldwell 926
- Hoffman led shooting 214
- Coming off the bench, Amanda Nardiello threw a 204 game
Match 3:
- SHU had a bye, shooting a combined 943
- Tyrrell was outstanding throwing a 256 game
Match 4:
- Kutztown 1047 - SHU 1005
- Three Pioneers shot over 200: Tartaglia 227, Hoffman 221, Mikaela Marbot 205
- This match ended up being the difference-maker, serrving as the final tiebreaker between the two top teams
Match 5:
- SHU 904 - Felician 797
- Hoffman had the only 200 game of the match, shooting 201
Singles Tournament:
- In head-to-head action in the singles tournament, Rossi began her climb to the top by downing teammate and No. 2 seeded Tyrrell 220-177 in the first round.
- She then defeated Jamie Lee Kuluga, who had completed the upset of No. 3 seeded Hoffman in round one, 188-165 in the quarterfinal
- Squaring up against her second straight Caldwell opponent, the junior moved into the championship match with the 155-139 win over Danielle Roca
- Rossi dominated the final match, clinching the win with the 198-129 victory over Felician's Jessica Zalewski
- No. 4 Tartaglia was the only other Pioneer to make it out of the first round defeating SHU rookie Gabby Gontarek 174-164, but was knocked out in the second round by eventual runner-up Zalewski 195-156 in the quarterfinal
