Men’s Golf Climbs to Third at Red Bandanna Invite

The Pios carded the second-best team score of the day

VERONA, N.Y. – Following a stellar round three on Labor Day, the Sacred Heart University men's golf team climbed to third on the final leaderboard at the Red Bandanna Invitational, hosted by Boston College at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, N.Y.

The Pioneers carded a team score of 299 (+11) on Monday, two strokes off eventual winners BC. SHU posted a 54-hole score of 911 (+47) after rounds of 307, 305 and 299. The Eagles finished their event with a score of 897 (+33) to win, while South Dakota took second at 908 (+44). SHU's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foes Manhattan (+105) and Merrimack (+108) placed in ninth and 10th, respectively. 

First year Ronan Mooney led Sacred Heart in a tie for fourth place. The Holden, Mass., native finished with a combined score of 223 (+7) after carding an even-par 72 today. Mooney added four birdies to his total on Monday, giving him a team-high 11 at the event.

Mike Rothberg finished next for the Pios in a tie for 14th. The senior tallied a three-round 230 (+14) following rounds of 76, 77 and 77. Rothberg carded four birdies to just 11 over-par scores in his 54 holes. 

The Pioneers' next four golfers finished within six strokes of each other. Pablo Lacayo led the group in a tie for 29th after a day-best 69 (-3) today, finishing with a score of 236 (+20). Sho Suzuki finished next in T31st with a score of 237 (+21), while Jon Bushka (240 (+24) took T40th and Yu Chan Ji Lim (242 (+26) took T46th. 

SHU will next host the SHU Fall Classic at the Great River Golf Club on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 8-9.
