FORT WORTH, Texas – For the first time in Sacred Heart University women's bowling history, SHU had two Pioneers named finalists for the Intercollegiate Singles Championships (ISC) on Friday, Mar. 7, at Cityview Lanes in Fort Worth, Texas.
To make the finals for ISC, a bowler needs to finish in the top six of its regional, with SHU's featuring 182 bowlers. Both
Madilyn Yockel and Karleigh Lemond accomplished this impressive feat on Friday. The sectionals, which are hosted by the United States Bowling Congress (USBC), feature teams from all three NCAA Divisions, NAIA and club.
Yockel placed fourth with 1,303 total pins over six games, ranking in the top 10 of all games and the top six in all but one. She cracked 230 pins twice, in the opening game and in game five.
Lemond took the final qualifying spot with 1,284 pins. She started the day strong but hit a rough patch in the middle games. Lemond bounced back over the last three games to earn the spot, cracking the top six for the first time after the final game.
Darcy Fruhschein was SHU's highest non-qualifying bowler in 13th place. She finished with 1,250 pins, cracking 200 in all but one game.
Hope Bunk (31st),
Paige Donovan (38th) and
Molly Chiesa (47th) all cracked the top 50 for the Pioneers.
The national singles competition will feature 24 female and 24 male student-athletes vying for the title in their respective divisions on Apr. 14-19 at South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas.
SHU will also take part in the Intercollegiate Team Championships (ITC) sectionals today and tomorrow at Cityview Lanes.
