Bowling Wins New England Cup

Donovan took second in individual match play

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Sacred Heart University women's bowling team took the top prize in the one-day New England Cup on Sunday at the East Providence Lanes in East Providence, R.I.

The Pioneers topped the four-team field with a 3-1 record, defeating #13 Merrimack in a Baker positional round to clinch the top spot. 

Senior Paige Donovan also took second in an eight-person individual match-play bracket. The Seaford, N.Y., native posted the second-best qualifying score before defeating Merrimack's Mya Duhamel and Cassidy Anschutz comfortably to punch her ticket to the final, where the Warriors' Olivia Lampkin tripped her up. 

Donovan was also the Pioneers' best bowler in their three traditional games, holding a 187.67 average, which was third-best in the tournament. Karleigh LeMond and Hannah Manetta also represented themselves well, placing fifth and sixth in traditional matches with averages of 182.00 and 176.67, respectively.

The Pioneers opened the event with a win over Bryant, 894-836. Sacred Heart then rolled to a win over Saint Anselm (940-796) before suffering a defeat to #13 Merrimack. The Pios then topped the Warriors 982-833 in a rematch in a Baker match to clinch the tournament. 

SHU will be back in action on Friday-Sunday, Feb. 9-11, to take part in the Flyer Classic, hosted by Lewis at the Strike N' Spare II in Lockport, Ill.
