NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Sacred Heart University women's bowling team finished 18th at the stacked Northeast Classic on Friday-Sunday, Jan. 19-21, as the Pioneers hosted the event at the Bowlerama in New Castle, Del.
The field for the tournament featured 19 teams ranked in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Top 25 Poll. SHU took 18th with four wins on the weekend. Of SHU's 13 matches, nine came against ranked opponents, which included the No. 1-, 2-, 4- and 6-ranked teams. No. 1-ranked Jacksonville State took the top prize at the event, besting No. 5 North Carolina A&T State in the first-place match.
The Pioneers tallied wins over McKendree (1,002-846) and Adelphi (1,004-793) in the Baker format and Howard (934-743) in a traditional match. Sacred Heart also earned a 4-2 victory over McKendree in the championship bracket on their way to the 17th-place match.
Molly Chiesa led the way for SHU bowlers who took part in all five traditional matches. She averaged 198.80 pins per frame in the traditional format.
Hannah Manetta was second on the team with a 195.40 average after bowling in all five contests.
The Pioneers will have off until Saturday, Feb. 3, when they open the Griffin Baker Classic, hosted by Chesnut Hill in Limerick, Pa.
