WOODBRIDGE, Va.. – The Sacred Heart University women's bowling team took 10th at the challenging Hawk Classic, hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday-Sunday, Nov. 17-19. The Pioneers picked up signature wins over defending national champion No. 2 Vanderbilt and No. 5 Sam Houston State. 

The tournament started on Friday with the baker portion of qualifying. SHU went 3-2 on the day, beating Wilmington, Lincoln Memorial and Vanderbilt. The Pioneers were clicking on all cylinders against the defending champs as SHU defeated the Commodores 1,112-1,055, the team's highest score of the day. 

On Saturday, the Pios posted a 3-2 record in the traditional format. SHU's momentum from beating Vanderbilt at the end of Friday rode right into its 1,091-1,073 win over ranked Sam Houston State to start Saturday. The Pioneers also defeated Adelphi, Central Missouri and Bryant in traditional matches, the last match coming on Sunday. 

After the event's qualifying portion, Sacred Heart headed to the Sunday championship bracket. The Pioneers started the bracketed matches with a win over Northeast Conference (NEC) foe Saint Francis (Pa.). Unfortunately for the Pioneers, a loss to Mount St. Mary's in the ninth-place match put SHU in 10th. 

Individually, Paige Donovan led the way for Sacred Heart by averaging 21.00 pins per frame for the tournament and 21.48 in the traditional portion of the tournament. Megan Prettyman also had a stellar weekend, averaging 20.88 pins per frame. 

The Pioneers will have off until Saturday, Dec. 2, when they begin the second NEC meet of the season in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
