DEPTFORD, N.J.—The Sacred Heart women's bowling team finished 18th overall at the Northeast Classic. The Pioneers went 4-8 overall in the tournament as they hosted 33 teams for the second largest tournament for NCAA bowling teams in the in history since the first year of the bowling championships in 2004
The field consisted of eleven teams from the central region and twenty-two teams from the northeast region. Competing in the tournament were 14 of the top 15 ranked teams and 22 out of the 25 ranked teams. All seven schools that have won the NCAA Championships competed in the event: Nebraska - 6, UMES - 3, SFA, Vanderbilt - 2, FDU - 2, McKendree -2 and Sam Houston – 1.
Rachel Glowniak was the top bowler of the weekend for Sacred Heart. She knocked down a total of 1,022 pins and had a 204.40 average.
On the first day of competition, Sacred Heart went 1-3 in the baker format. The Pioneers picked up the lone win of the day over Adelphi, 1044-771 but fell to Medaille, McKendree, and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
On the second day, the Pioneers went 2-3 in the traditional format, with wins over Wilmington (910-797) and Sam Houston (992-965) but fell to Arkansas State University, Vanderbilt, and the eventual tournament winner, University of Nebraska.
On the final day in the bracket round, the Pioneers opened with a loss to Fairleigh Dickinson, 1,231-1,065. Sacred Heart moved on to face University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and came out on top with a 1,185-1,052 wins. In the final round, SHU had to face FDU for the second time of the day, falling 1,007-984.
In total, Sacred Heart knocked down 12,652 pins through 67 games during the tournament.
The Pioneers are back in action at the Sunshine State Classic on February 10th.
