BETHELEHEM, Pa. – The Sacred Heart University women's bowling team remains at the top of the Northeast Conference after its final weekend of regular season league play. The Pioneers went 4-3 across the two days and now post a 16-5 record against NEC opponents which makes them the regular season victors. SHU will now hold the one seed going into the NEC Tournament starting on March 25.
SHU started the weekend slow and fell to Mount St. Mary's, 1,080-869, before dropping a heartbreaker to Fairleigh Dickinson by just one point, 985-984. Against the Knights, Sacred Heart erased a 60+ deficit but were unable to hold them off. The Pioneers ended the first day on a high note with a convincing 929-750 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn. Colby Jones led the Red & White on day one with a 21.60 frame average.
In day two, the Pioneers went 3-1 on the day with a lone loss to Duquesne, 908-888. Sacred Heart came from behind to tie Long Island at 982 apiece and prevailed in the tiebreaker, 128-107, to seal the win. SHU continued to fight and edged Saint Francis by one, 934-933, before ending the weekend with a 986-887 win over Wagner. First-year
Rachel Glowniak was the team leader in the second day with a 20.21 frame average.
Over the course of the weekend, Jones was SHU's high scorer with 20.63 per frame across 70 total. She also led the team in strikes at 49% (34-70).
Four Pioneers were a perfect 100% for nine-count and eight-count spares, including
Amanda Shelters,
Mercedes Morel,
Jacqueline Gonzalez and Glowniak.
The Pioneers earned their fifth regular season title and second-straight. Before the NEC Tournament on March 25, SHU will hit the lanes on March 12 for ITC Sectionals.
