DEPTFORD, N.J. – The Sacred Heart University bowling team cohosted the Northeast Classic with Long Island University in its first tournament of the New Year. The Pioneers finished 12
th out of 18 teams and posted a 6-7 record on the weekend.
The tournament consisted of 18 teams, 17 of which are ranked in the top 25 nationally. Four of the five teams that finished in the top five of the tournament, also rank in the top five in the country. Vanderbilt came out on top for the second time in three years of the tournament.
The Pioneers started the weekend off shaky as they dropped four-straight baker matches to McKendree (1,034-914), Stephen F. Austin State (955-908), Vanderbilt (1,134-996), and Maryville (1,060-1,001), before ending the day on a high note with a 1,000-996 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Day two consisted of five traditional scoring matches and the Pioneers were able to bounce back and post a 3-2 record on the day. First-year
Nancy Kohut posted the highest individual score of the day when she bowled a 267 to help SHU defeat Lincoln Memorial, 1,089-1,000, in game four. After topping Wilmington with a convincing 1,032-866 victory, the Pioneers dropped a narrow two-point loss to the Wildcats in game two, 1,017-1,015. No Pioneer was able to break 200 points in game three as the Red & White fell, 1,059-928, to Youngstown State. Sacred Heart finished strong against Sam Houston State with a 1,086-941 victory. Kohut led in the final match of the day with 254 points followed by junior
Hannah Mannetta with 245.
The Pioneers ranked 14
th heading into the final day in the championship bracket. SHU topped Monmouth, 1,221-1,212, and Northeast Conference foe Fairleigh Dickinson, 1,006-941, before falling to Lincoln Memorial, 1,118-970, to finish 12
th overall.
Mannetta ranked among the top-20 in the tournament in individual scoring. The junior posted 1,072 points for an average of 214 per game.
