Men's Volleyball Falls to Springfield in Five Sets

FAIRFIELD, CONN.– The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team fell to Springfield, 3-2, Wednesday night. The Pioneers remain 1-11 in the EIVA, but their overall record drops to 3-16.

Emerson Waumans led the Pioneers with a season-high 20 kills and three digs. While Noah Richetti racked up 36 assists.

The Pioneers wrap up their season with back-to-back games against the University of Charleston West Virginia. The first match is set to tip-off on Friday April 12, at 6pm.

First Set: SHU 25, SPR 20

  • Waumans got the Pioneers off to a strong start with two early kills

  • Springfield went on a 3-0 run to even the score, 5-5

  • SHU then went on a 6-2 run taking a 14-10 lead

  • The Spirit had a late run, but it was not enough to catch the Pioneers who won the first match, 25-20

Second Set: SPR 25, SHU 18

  • The two teams were locked in a tie, 7-7

  • With the game tied up, the Spirit went on a dominating 6--2 run to pull ahead 13-9

  • Strong play from the Pioneers brought them within 3 points of Springfield at 21-18

  • Springfield went on a 5-0 run to take the set, 25-18

Third Set: SPR 25, SHU 17

  • Again, the set was tied early, 8-8

  • The Pioneers managed to keep the match within one point, as Springfield held a 15-14 edge

  • After a decisive 7-0 run, Springfield took the third set 25-17

Fourth Set: SHU 25 , SPR 19

  • The Spirit nabbed an early 7-2 lead

  • The Pioneers went on a convincing 8-3 run to tie the game 10-10

  • With the match all tied up, Waumans notched a pair of kills to give the Pioneers a 18-17 lead

  • Sacred Heart took the set 25-19

Fifth Set: SPR 15 , SHU 12

  • Strong play on both sides had the set tied at 4-4

  • The Spirit went on a 5-2 run to take the set 15-12

By The Numbers

  • Noah Ricchetti recorded 37 of Sacred Heart's 45 assists

  • Both teams recorded 13 kills in the second set

  • Blake Cox recorded a team-high 9 digs

  • Springfield recorded a match-high .345 in the second set

  • The Pioneers' 23-17 lead in the first set was the largest of the match
