Men's Volleyball Falls to St. Francis U. in Straight Sets

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to St. Francis U. Friday evening on the road. The loss drops the Pioneers to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the EIVA, while the Red Flash improve to 7-5 on the year and 1-1 in conference play.

Emerson Waumans and Jakob Karlsson led the Pioneers with nine kills apiece. Noah Richetti led SHU with 17 assists in the loss.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 16, when they travel to take on Penn State at 7 p.m.

First Set: SFU 25, SHU 22

  • The teams played to an early 6-6 tie

  • The Red Flash went on a 4-1 run to take a 10-7 lead

  • After SHU battled back to tie the contest at 12-12, the two sides traded points to a 15-15 tie

  • With the Red Flash leading 19-18, St. Francis went on a 5-2 run to extend its lead to 24-20

  • SHU took the next two points but an Evan Feltz kill secured the set for the Red Flash

Second Set: SFU 25, SHU 14

  • The Red Flash used the momentum from the first set to jump out to a 16-6 lead

  • St. Francis U. kept its distance in the set, not allowing SHU to get within single-digits until the Pioneers cut the deficit to 20-11

  • However, the Red Flash took five of the next eight points to secure the set win

Third Set: SFU 25, SHU 22

  • With the set tied at 3-3, the Red Flash went on a 3-0 run to extend its lead to 6-3

  • The Red Flash was able to hold a lead throughout the set, as the closest the Pioneers were able to cut the deficit to two multiple times late in the set

  • With SFU holding a 24-21 lead, the Red Flash recorded a service error

  • The Red Flash secured the win after a SHU service error

By The Numbers:

  • SHU finished with nine blocks in the match, with three from Rob Chatteron

  • The Pioneers hit .191 for the match

  • Ricchetti handed out 17 of the Pioneers 23 assists

  • Patrick Bryan led St. Francis with 15 kills

  • The Red Flash hit .338 for the contest
