Box Score The Sacred Heart Men's Volleyball lost a heart breaker to the Patriots of George Mason in a five set match. The Pioneers opened up taking the opening set, but the Patriots rallied to take the second, third, and fifth set to defeat the Pioneers. SHU is now 5-5 in the EIVA, and look to get back on track as they are back in the Pitt Center this week taking on Penn State on Friday, and Senior Day against St. Francis U on Saturday.
SET 1-
- The Patriots started off taking a 7-4 lead, and forcing a SHU timeout
- Sacred Heart rallied after their timeout to regroup, as they went on to tie it up 13-13
- Doug Dzema added a big kill to give SHU a 18-16 advantage as the Pioneers held on to take the first set 25-22
SET 2-
- George Mason came out in the second set focused as they hung with the Pioneers and kept the score close at 9-9
- Michael Comens added a must needed kill for SHU to make it 16-13 in favor of George Mason
- Despite SHU coming within one, the Patriots held on to take the set 25-22
SET 3-
- The Pioneers showed early signs of success in the fourth set as they tied it up 4-4 after a an attack error from the Patriots
- SHU wouldn't regain the lead the remainder of the set, as they would drop the third set 25-17
SET 4-
- Head Coach Greg Walker knew the importance of the fourth set as he regrouped his squad to bounce back
- SHU trailed early but tied it up at 13-13 after a Taylor Bloomquist kill, and never looked back
- SHU would hold the lead the remainder of the set to take it 25-20 and force a fifth set
SET 5-
- In back and forth fashion, each team exchanged point after point till the match was tied at 6-6
- The Patriots would then go on a four point run, but SHU would respond with a 4-1 run, and trail 11-10
- George Mason would prevail and take the final set 15-11
