Box Score Fairfield, CT- The Sacred Heart men's volleyball team improve to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in EIVA play as they sweep the Golden Eagles of Charleston for the second night in a row. The Pioneers were lead by Emerson Waumans who finished the night with 11 kills. The Pioneers hit the road for a pair of games next weekend as they take on St. Francis U, and Penn State.
Note Worthy-
- Waumans lead the team with 11 kills, and hit .421 (11-19)
- Eduardo Zardo made his 2017 debut as the primary setter and dished out 36 assists on the night.
- Taylor Bloomquists continues to be a beast at the net, registering 2 solo blocks, and 1 block assist.
SET 1- Each team exchanged kills back and forth to start the opening game until a kill from Eduardo Zardo, followed by a kill from Taylor Bloomquist, and a Golden Eagle attack error to give the Pioneers a 9-4 advantage. The Charleston coach would take a timeout to try and stop the momentum, but SHU would go respond with an ace from Zardo. The Golden Eagles would go on a five-point run but a kill from Chris Delucie would cut the run, and put Sacred Heart back on track to set up for a kill from Doug Dzema, and a service ace from Blake Cox to move the score to 21-13 in favor of SHU. Michael Comens would end the opening set with a kill to seal the deal for a 25-16 win.
SET2- The second game was quite the show, as each team never broke more then a three-point margin. Charleston tied the set up after registering back-to-back kills, but SHU would answer with a block assist from Dzema, and Waumans to get a 15-13 lead. The Golden Eagles continued to keep it close, tying it up at 18-18, but a kill from Delucie would spark a 4-1 run putting the set away 25-21 with SHU on top.
SET 3- The Golden Eagles started the third set on a tear, jumping to a 8-5 lead and forcing Sacred Heart to take their first timeout of the night. The Timeout would payoff as SHU would go on a 3-1 run and move the score within one, but the Pioneers still found themselves down one. Back-to-back blocks from Bloomquist would get the Pioneers their first lead of the set, at 13-12. Sacred Heart found their rhythm as Waumans added another solo block, forcing Charleston to use a timeout, and to move the score to 15-13 in favor of SHU. The Pioneers were here for a sweep, and that's what they got as they finished off the Golden Eagles 25- 20.
