Mackenzie Ties Season High 22 Kills in Season Finale

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. (April 25, 2015)—Enzo Mackenzie tied a season-best with 22 kills as the Sacred Heart men's volleyball team fell to Harvard in five sets in the 2015 season finale. After trading set wins, the Crimson bested the Pioneers 15-8 in the deciding set to end SHU's season at 12-13 and 3-9 against Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association teams, as Harvard improved to 13-11 and 7-5 against conference opponents.

Harvard led from the start of the first set using DJ White's three-point service run to gain a 3-1 advantage. The Crimson continued to expand its lead with the Pioneers only coming within four points twice en route to the 25-20 victory.

After exchanging points to open the second set, Travis Vonholt's kill sparked a three-point SHU run moments before Eduardo Zardo's five-point service run boosted the Pioneers to an 11-5 lead. Vonholt recorded four kills and hit .800 as Sacred heart took the set 25-20.

The Crimson capitalized on three SHU errors for an immediate 3-0 lead in the third set. A kill from Doug Dzema halted the streak, but couldn't stop Harvard. Branden Clemens recorded three consecutive kills as part of a six-point Crimson run for a 10-3 lead. The Pioneers minimized the deficit at three points, 22-19 with a kill from Austin Arcala, but Harvard moved to a 2-1 match lead with the 25-22 win.

The tables turned in the fourth set as this time it was Sacred Heart who took a 3-0 lead before the Crimson managed a point. Harvard came back though, evening the score at seven before two SHU errors gave it a 9-7 advantage. But the Pioneers rallied with three straight kills from Mackenzie, Ray Satagaj and Arcala to reclaim the lead 11-10. A Pioneer service error evened the score again at 11, but that would be the last time as SHU took the next two points and never relinquished the lead from there. Mackenzie accounted for six of SHU's 16 kills in the 25-20 win.

Harvard took the first four points of the fifth set and the Pioneers could never recover from there falling 15-8.
