Box Score FAIRFIELD, CONN. (April 18, 2015)—After taking the first two sets 25-17 and 25-19, the Sacred Heart men's volleyball team couldn't stop George Mason's comeback resulting in a 3-2 loss on Senior Day. Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) led the Pioneers with 17 kills, while Chris DeLucie (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) posted a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs as the Pioneers fall to an even 12-12 on the season and 3-8 in EIVA play.
SHU came out on fire in the first set taking an early 8-4 lead and only continued to widen the gap. With the Pioneers up 18-14, DeLucie sent down a kill sparking a six-point SHU run, which featured three consecutive kills from Mackenzie, to move Sacred Heart to set-point. The Patriots fought back with three straight points, but Mackenzie's eighth kill of the set gave SHU the win 25-17.
After exchanging the opening points of the second set, Eduardo Zardo's (Brasilia, Brazil) five-point service run boosted the Pioneers to another early lead, 7-3. SHU seemed to be running away with the set once again before Mason's 7-3 streak cut the Pioneers' lead to just two points, 20-18. The teams traded the next three points before the Patriots committed three consecutive errors falling to Sacred Heart 25-19.
The Pioneers struggled right out of the gate in the third set as George Mason took a big 8-1 lead right away and Sacred Heart could never recover dropping the set 25-20. The fourth set looked much the same as SHU's struggles continued and the Patriots' 25-10 win forced a game five.
Mason took the first two points of the 15-point set, but the Pioneers remained close and eventually tied the score at eight on a Patriot hitting error. GMU rebounded claiming the next two points for a lead Sacred Heart couldn't catch.
The Pioneers wrap up the regular season next Saturday at Harvard at 4:00 p.m.
