Box Score PRINCETON, N.J. (February 14, 2015)—Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) led the Pioneer with 14 kills and teammate Doug Dzema (Manalapan, N.J.) posted an errorless match as the Sacred Heart men's basketball team was swept by Princeton Saturday night. SHU falls to 3-6 on the season and 1-2 in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play.
The Pioneers held a steady lead over the Tigers throughout the beginning of the first set after a kill from Chris DeLucie (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) got the offense started. But with the Pioneers up 12-9, Princeton used a nine-point streak to cruise to a 18-12 lead. Sacred Heart managed just two more points off kills from Austin Arcala (Long Beach, Calif.), but dropped the first set 25-13.
After exchanging points to open the second set, Arcala sparked a six-point run, which lifted SHU to a 14-10 lead, sending down a kill. Riding a five-point lead towards the finish line, the Pioneers were halted by the Tigers' 10-point run on which they capitalizing on SHU errors that. Sacred Heart couldn't recover from the deficit getting just three more points as Princeton went on to win 25-20.
Sacred Heart jumped out again in the third set, taking the first four points with kills from Trent Thompson (Kailua, Hawaii) and Arcala and an ace from Mackenzie. But the pesky tigers chipped away at the lead keeping the score close. The Pioneers managed to hold them at bay but eventually they came back to knot the score at 23. With both teams fighting hard, the score tied again at 24 and 25 forcing extra points. The Tigers took the next two with a kill and a service ace, clinching the match.
SHU returns home next Saturday, Feb. 21 when they host Coker College in the opening game of a three-game home stand.
