Box Score

The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team opened Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play Friday night with a 3-0 loss to visiting Harvard University at the William H. Pitt Center.  The loss drops the Pioneers to 3-5 on the year and 0-1 in league play, while the Crimson improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in conference action.

Harvard jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening set, before a kill from Brad Borsay (Richmond, RI) put the Pioneers on the board.  Sacred Heart dropped the next two points, falling behind 5-1, before scoring seven of nine points, including four straight with Borsay serving, to take an 8-7 advantage. The Pioneer run continued, and a Borsay kill gave Sacred Heart its largest lead, 12-10, before Harvard scored three straight to recapture the lead.  An Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) kill ended the run and knotted the score, 13-13, before the Crimson scored four unanswered and finished the set with a 12-4 run, for the 25-17 victory.

The second set started in similar fashion, with three quick Harvard points, before a Will LeClerc (Fairfield, CT) kill put Sacred Heart on the board, for the first of two Pioneer points, to make it 3-2. The Crimson scored 14 of the next 19 points to open a 17-7 advantage. Borsay ended the run with a kill and then paced Sacred Heart two consecutive points, including one of his three aces, to start Sacred Heart on a run that saw Sacred Heart get back within three, 19-16.  After trading points, a Raymond Satagaj (Rocky Jill, CT) kill made is 21-18, but Harvard tallied the final four points to earn the set victory, 25-18.

Harvard recorded the first two points of the third set and led 4-1, before a 5-2 run, with Mackenzie serving four straight points to knot the score 6-6. Following a Harvard timeout, the Crimson earned back-to-back points and would never trail again as they finished the match with a 25-19 victory in the third set.
