Pioneers Down George Mason 3-1

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, CONN. (February 15, 2014)—Three Pioneers reached double-digit kills as the Sacred Heart men's volleyball team defeated George Mason University 3-1 Saturday night in the William H. Pitt Center. Senior Brad Borsay (Richmond, R.I.) paced the match with 16 kills, while Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Jason Kinney (Salem, N.H.) recorded 10 each. The win makes Sacred Heart 5-6 overall this season, and an even 2-2 in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play.

The Pioneers got the opening point on Borsay's first kill of the night, but the Patriots quickly answered claiming the lead on a SHU service error. Four-point service runs from Hunter Stevens and Jonathan Lutz further expanded George Mason's lead en route to the 25-17 victory.

Sacred Heart once again took an early lead in the second set 3-1, but a kill from Jack Wilson put George Mason back on top 5-4. The teams exchanged points tying the score 10 times before a kill from Raymond Satagaj (Rocky Hill, Conn.) sparked a three-point Pioneer run and forced George Mason to call a timeout. The break proved fruitful as the Patriots took the next points, but SHU fended them off with a kill by Mackenzie. The teams swapped bad serves and on a George Mason attack error, the Pioneers took the set 25-23.

The third set was SHU's best of the night as the Pioneers hit .481 making just three attack errors. George Mason's only lead of the game was early, 3-2, before back-to-back kills from Kinney put the Pioneers back on top. From there, Sacred Heart never looked back, taking their largest lead of six points on a Mackenzie kill, 18-12, on the way to the 25-21 win.

The Pioneers jumped out to another early 3-1 lead, and held onto it until a five-point Patriot run put George Mason ahead 12-9. Sophomore setter R.J. Uhlir (Norfolk, Neb.), who recorded 43 assists in the match, answered with his own five-point service run to once again give the Sacred Heart the lead. A four-point service-run from Borsay quickly followed sealing the win for SHU 25-21.

SHU hits the road next weekend to face EIVA foe Penn State Friday before battling Saint Francis U for the NEC Cup Saturday.
