Pioneers Fall to NJIT in Three

Newark, N.J. (February 23, 2013)—The Sacred Heart Men's Volleyball team fell in three sets Saturday night to NJIT. Brad Borsay (Richmond, R.I.) led the Pioneers with eight kills, while Adrian Fernandez (San Juan, PR) hit .238 with nine kills on 21 attempts and just four errors. Sacred Heart falls to 2-9 on the season.

The Pioneers held brief one-point leads early in the first set, but the damage came in the middle of the set when NJIT posted a 6-1 run to boost them to a five point lead, 15-10. From there they never looked back, taking the set 25-16. Borsay led the set with four digs, and Travis Vonholt (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led the team with two kills.

Sacred Heart held close for most of the second half. Fernandez led the team with three kills, but it wasn't enough to catch NJIT whose five-point run ended the set 25-17, giving them a 2-0 match lead.

The Pioneers came out strong in the third set, leading for the majority of it. With Sacred Heart up 14-12, a SHU service errors started the Highlanders on a six-point run lifting them to a 17-14 lead. Sacred Heart fought back, coming within one of the surging NJIT, but, once again, the Highlanders ran to the finish line on a six-point run to take the set 25-18 and with it the match. Borsay and Fernandez both had their best sets of the night recording five kills each.

Sacred Heart continues its road trip next weekend, facing Princeton Friday and George Mason Saturday.
