New York, NY - The SHU men's volleyball team secured a pair of wins Saturday afternoon against Medaille and Baruch as Bradley Borsay (Richmond, RI) closed the day out with an impressive 14 kills along with a .579 hitting percentage in SHU's sweep of Baruch.  The Pioneers dropped the first set of their opening match against Medaille but would rally to win the next six sets of competition.  Complete stats of SHU's 3-1 victory over Medaille are not yet available but will be on www.sacredheartpioneers.com as soon as possible.

Sacred Heart (2-3) gained some separation over Baruch in a tight opening set with a late 4-1 surge to take a 22-17 lead.  The rally was capped by a three-person block from Mike Komlanc (St. Croix, Virgin Islands), Nick Hunt (Uniondale, NY), and Borsay followed by an Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) service ace.  The Pioneers finished with a season high ten service aces with four coming from Borsay swings.  Hunt finished with 10 kills while Mackenzie rounded out his stat line with seven kills and a .429 hitting percentage.  SHU claimed the set, 25-20, on a block from Jason Kinney (Salem, NH) and John Lutjen (Smithtown, NY).

The two sides played even in the middle frame with both offenses notching 11 kills.  Baruch won back-to-back points to swing the pendulum back in their favor and earn a late 23-22 edge.  However, SHU knotted it at 23-23 on a Borsay kill and got a set point at 24-23 following a setting error from the home team.  Sacred Heart forced an attacking error on the next point and took the set, 25-23, and moved within one set of the victory.

The Pioneer offense fired on all cylinders in the final set, racking up 15 kills with a blistering .522 hitting percentage.  Lutjen directed the SHU attack all afternoon and tallied 32 against Baruch.  SHU finished the match with a 25-19 victory in the third set as Will LeClerc (Fairfield, CT) hammered home his lone kill of the contest to claim Sacred Heart's match point.

Sacred Heart will look to make it three straight in their first home match of 2012 tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm in the William H. Pitt Center against Lees-McRae.
