Cambridge, MA -
Freshman Brady Weissbourd smashed 11 kills on 17 swings to lead the Harvard men's volleyball team to a 3-0 win against Sacred Heart Saturday at the Malkin Athletic Center.
Weissbourd played just two games, but made the most of his time, committing just two errors and ending the match with a .529 hitting percentage. Junior Dave Fitz added 31 assists and was one of 11 players to record kills for the Crimson (4-9, 3-3 EIVA).
Alex Cantani (Larkspur, CA) led the Pioneers (0-9, 0-3), who came up short of their first win, despite playing competitive second and third games. Brent Monden (Kanehoe, HI) recorded six digs for Sacred Heart, and John Breen (North Andover, MA) provided six blocks, five solo.
The opening game was never in contention, as the Crimson hit .565 on 14 kills and one error in 23 swings, while the Pioneers had eight kills and eight errors for .000 hitting. Harvard pulled away with a 7-0 run to go up 11-4 and built the lead from there.
Game 2 was tight with Sacred Heart holding an edge as late as 25-23. Harvard coach Chris Ridolfi called timeout, junior Andy Nelson got the serve back with a kill and the Crimson took the lead for good with three points on the serve of junior Laurence Favrot.
Harvard held a 24-22 lead in the third and took five of the next six points to distance itself. Sophomore Jamie Crooks started the run with a kill, and Weissbourd posted a kill to end the match.
Favrot led Harvard with six digs, while Fitz and Brian Rapp notched five each. Seamus McKiernan had six kills and three blocks.
The Pioneers are back in action Wednesday night when they host New Jersey Tech. Game time at the Pitt Center is 7:00 pm.
