LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - It was a strong opening day for the Sacred Heart women's track and field team at the MAAC Outdoor Championship. The Pioneers scored 39 points and sit in third place after six events.Ā

Kaitlyn Luba captured the MAAC javelin championship with a toss of 43.11, more than two meters farther than second-place finisher Rebecca Weir of Mount St. Mary's. SHU's
Marisa Imme (39.98) finished sixth in the event.Ā

Sierra Thompson also made it to the medal stand by finishing second in the long jump with a school-record leap of 6.02 meters. It also was a MAAC Championship record. Camryn Jones-Howard was the winner with a jump of 6.04 meters, but because it was wind aided it doesn't qualify as the MAAC record.Ā

In the pole vault, Sacred Heart had two of the top seven finishers.
Jenna Engels (3.75m) was fourth and
Sophia DeMillio (3.35m) tied for seventh.Ā

In the 10,000 run, Grace Souza finished fourth with a time of 36:39.63, and in the 3000 steeplechase,
Grace Miller placed seventh with a time of 11:22.24.Ā

Three Pioneers qualified for Sunday's final in the 100 hurdles -
Magdalena Brogioli (13.96, 2nd fastest time), Thompson (14.38, 4th) and
Ariyana Jackson (14.39, 5th). Ā
Ā
Brogioli (11.95, 5th fastest time) and
Nyahingiva Musa (12.07, 8th) will both race in Sunday's 100 dash final.Ā

Thompson (24.65) had the fastest qualifying time in the 200 dash.Ā
Grace Del Giorno (4:48.42) qualified for final in the 1500, andĀ
Ava Srinivasan (1:05.05, 6th) advanced to the final in the 400 hurdles.Ā
