EDISON, N.J. First-year Sierra Thompson has earned back-to-back Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Athlete of the Week nominations. Last week, Thompson earned her first award after being named Track Athlete of the Week after a stellar performance in the heptathlon at the UConn Northeast Challenge. This week, Thompson earns her first Field Athlete of the Week honor on the heels of breaking a decade-old school record.

On Friday, Sierra Thompson had a big day at the jumping events at the James Barber/Jack Maloney Invitational at Southern Connecticut State University. Three of her five long jumps had already equaled or surpassed the ECAC qualifying standard of 5.50 meters (18' ½") when she got on the runway for her final jump of the competition. The South Kingston, R.I. native launched herself to a huge personal best of 5.99 meters (19' 8") on that jump to take over the MAAC lead in the event. More importantly, Thompson broke the existing Sacred Heart school record of 5.90 meters (19' 4' ¼") set in 2015 by another SHU heptathlete, Nicole Bartosch. Thompson also competed in the high jump on Friday, clearing a season's best of 1.60 meters (5' 3"), which currently ranks her 7th in the MAAC, tied with several other athletes.
