NEW HAVEN, CT. — The Pioneers took a quick trip to New Haven to compete at the Wilton Wright Invitational. The bitter weather didn't seem to bother the Pioneers as they would go on to complete with multiple event wins, top finishes, and personal bests. Two underclassmen throwers went on to secure the only individual event wins. Tyler Durang won the Hammer Throw, and Mason Marino snagged the win in Javelin. The 4x100m relay team of Deronn Adams, Rafael Mahario, Damon Wilson, and Colin Brown also grabbed a win.
Success would continue for many of these athletes. Durang, a first-year out of Lincoln, R.I., was one of only two athletes to throw further than 45 meters in discus. His throw of 45.37m secured another top finish of second place. Wilson, a sophomore out of West Warick, R.I, grabbed second in the 400m hurdles, finishing in 58.54. Mahario, a senior out of Meriden, CT, also finished in second, running his 400m in 49.67.
In the pole vault, personal bests were flying around. Sophomore Langston Pearson had a great day in the vault, securing a new personal best mark of 3.55m. Junior Douglas Suter continued the great day with another personal best mark. Suter joins the 4-meter club after clearing the mark on his second attempt. The Somers, Conn. native, finished in second place.
