Women’s Hockey Skates to Draw at Saint Anselm; Hawks Win Shootout

Antonakis and McNeil SHU goal scorers

MANCHESTER, N.H. - There was plenty of offense on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Arena as Sacred Heart and Saint Anselm combined for 86 shots. Both goaltenders, though, were sharp, and after 65 minutes the score was tied at 2-2. The Hawks won the shootout.

It was still a productive weekend for the Pioneers, who took Friday's game 3-2.

Lauren Larson finished with 38 saves in goal for SHU, including all 21 she faced in the second period. Ava Hills stopped 44 shots for Saint Anselm.

Sydney Antonakis and Paige McNeil were the SHU goal scorers.

BUSY OPENING PERIOD

Saint Anselm struck first when Aubrey Jackson scored her third goal of the series at 6:28. The Pioneers answered quickly. Just 1:30 after Jackson's goal, Antonakis fired a shot past Hills to even the score. The Hawks scored late in the period to regain the lead.

PIONEERS GET ONLY TALLY OF SECOND

The Hawks had the edge in play over the second 20 minutes, but it was Sacred Heart that had the only goal. It came when McNeil scored her second goal of the season midway through the period. Saint Anslem finished with 21-13 edge in shots in the period.

SCORELESS THIRD

The third period was scoreless but not for lack of opportunities. Both teams had time on the power play but couldn't capitalize.

OVERTIME

The Pioneers had a 5-3 edge in shots in the 5-minute extra period.

SHOOTOUT

After Hills made a save on SHU's opening attempt, Jackson converted for the Hawks. Kate Helgeson beat Hills in the second round, but Tyra Turner answered for Saint Anselm. Hills' stop in the third round sealed the shootout win.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Pioneers return to the Martire Family Arena next weekend to host Stonehill in a two-game series. Puck drop on both Friday and Saturday is set for 2 p.m.
