NEW HAVEN, Conn. — 12 top five finishes culminated in a successful debut for the Sacred Heart University men's track & field team as it wrapped up the first weekend of the 2024-25 indoor season at the Yale Season Opener.
SHU racked up three of its top five placements in the field with senior
Nazir Hibbert grabbing the silver medal in the men's high jump, clearing 1.88m on his second attempt at the height. Elsewhere in jumps, first year Benjamin Mandler took a fifth-place outing in the pole vault in his collegiate debut. In throws, Aiden Glennon claimed third place in his season debut, earning a mark of 14.66 meters on his second throw.
The Red & White had strong outings on the track especially in the mid-distance and distance runs, highlighted by
Matthew Vene's silver medal outing in the 3000m run. Vene, who finished in 9:10.8, grabbed SHU's highest finish in the event with Anthony Esposito, Demetri Franzese and Harjaap Singh – all first-year runners – finishing in order behind him to grab four of SHU's nine top five placements on the track.
In the mid-distance,
Jordan Leon grabbed a strong finish in the mile with a time of 4:37.22 while
Lance Hayes and Dylan Peterson took fourth and fifth in the 1000m run, respectively. SHU's final individual top five placement came in the 200m with first year DeRonn Adams taking fourth with a time of 22.72. In the 4x400m relay, SHU's A-squad of Khristian Kennedy,
Lance Hayes,
Christian Sonta and Emmanuel Tabe grabbed fifth place as the Pios concluded the day's events. Full results can be found at
