Men’s Volleyball Competes at the Battle 4 The Boardwalk Tournament

Mucherino combined for a team-high 22 kills

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team fell to both Belmont Abbey and Barton in the Battle 4 the Boardwalk Tournament, hosted by FDU, Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened:
In the opening set, SHU maintained the lead until an impressive rally from the Crusaders evened the frame at 18-18. The Crusaders kept their rally alive and closed the set on a 7-2 run for an early 1-0 advantage. The Pioneers tallied 14 kills to the Crusaders 11, although the Crusaders hit .375 to SHU's .333.
 
The second set saw the Pioneers and Crusaders battle through six ties. After SHU called a time-out, trailing 17-14, the Pioneers battled a Crusader 8-7 run but were unable to come back, drawing a 25-21 loss.
 
Belmont Abbey took an early lead in the third, and the Pioneers were unable to respond, falling 25-17.
 
Carlos Terrassa paced the Pioneers' offense with 12 kills. Libero Cole Younger tallied a team-high of five digs, while SHU setter Teddy Payne secured 16 assists.

How It Happened:

The first and second sets were closely contested between the Pioneers and Bulldogs, but SHU came up short, 25-23, in both. 

Sacred Heart made some lineup adjustments going into the fourth and maintained its lead throughout the set, winning 25-21. The Pioneers tallied 13 kills to the Bulldogs' 7. 

The Pioneers continued their momentum into the fourth quarter, defeating the Bulldogs 25-21. The Pios hit .306 to Barton's .156.

Barton won nine of the first 11 points in the fifth, four being Pioneer attack errors. The Bulldogs went on to win the final 15-8.

Patrick Mucherino led the Pioneers' offense with 14 kills. Carter Lyons, Jack Chow, and Jaron Popp also hit well, tallying 13, nine, and nine kills, respectively. At setter, junior Colin Stevens had career highs of 51 assists and 11 digs.

Up Next:
The Pioneers return home next Saturday, January 20th, to face George Mason at 5:00 p.m.
