Pioneers Fall To Toledo, 7-2 in Weekend Finale

BATON ROUGE, La.— The Sacred Heart University baseball team concluded its round-robin weekend at Alex Box Stadium with a 7-2 loss to Toledo on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers (2-4) were unable to come back after the Rockets (3-7) jumped to the early lead with the three-run third inning. 

Toledo opened the scoring in the third as Matt Hansen picked up the two-out double to right center field. SHU starter Baylor Sundahl conceded back-to-back walks to load the bases for clean-up hitter Brad Boss. The Rockets left fielder turned on the 3-1 pitch sending it over the right-field wall for the grand slam.

The Rockets added another run in the top of the sixth on the fielder's choice RBI by Riley Campbell. The SHU bats were quitted by Sam Shutes who allowed just two early hits with 11 strikeouts through the first six innings.

After a pitching change to lead off the bottom of the seventh, co-captain Cody Doyle led things off with the one-out walk. He moved to second on the single through the left side. Sophomore Bobby Garbuio came on to pinch hit and sent the 1-0 pitch through the right side to load the bases. Senior co-captain PJ DeFilippo delivered the 2-2 offering up the middle to score two runs getting SHU on the board.

Toledo put the game away in the next half inning as Trace Hatfield recorded the RBI double and Campbell with the RBI single to bring the score to 7-2. SHU was outhit 12-5 on the day.


DeFilippo led the Pioneers with his second multi-hit game of the season. Jake Frasca also contributed a hit along with Garbuio and Thibault. 

Sundahl pitched five innings in the loss, recording a season-high seven strikeouts. The Pioneers freshmen saw time out of the pen in relief of Sundahl. Matt Aufiero, Joe Greco, and Thomas Pinto all made their first appearance of the weekend.

The Pioneers travel to Nicholls State for a two-game series beginning Tuesday, March 6. First pitch from Ray E. Didier Field is set for 7:00 p.m. eastern.
