Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader From Mount, 10-5 and 4-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(Bridgeport, CT) - The Sacred Heart University Baseball team picked up two conference victories with a doubleheader sweep of Mount St. Mary's Friday at the Ballpark Yard, winning 10-5 and 4-2.

In the first game, Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) picked up the win with 7.1 solid innings, giving up four runs on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.  The Mount took a 2-0 lead on an RBI groundout in the first by Mark Quaranta and an RBI single by Jay Knight in the second.  However, Scribner settled down after that, shutting down the Mountaineers until the eighth.

Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) put SHU on the board in second with an RBI triple, then came home on a Dan Perez (Seymour, CT) sacrifice fly to tie the game.  SHU went up for good in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Conor McEvoy (Watertown, CT), with John Murphy (Seymour, CT) racing home to beat throw with a great back-door hook slide on a shallow fly to right.

The Pioneers exploded for five runs in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI single by Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT) and a two-run single by Murphy.  Boisture added insurance with a two-run single in the seventh.

In the night cap, Nick Leiningen (Millwood, NY) threw a three-hit complete game, going the distance for a victory for the second straight start.  The Pioneers took an early lead when a run came home on an error by Mount shortstop Nick Walker that could have potentially been an inning-ending double play.  Murphy came through with the biggest hit of the game, a bases-clearing three-run triple in the second.

Leiningen earned the win with some help by Boisture, who made two phenomenal catches in right field behind the sophomore lefty.

Sacred Heart hosts the Mount in another doubleheader Saturday, now beginning at 10:00 am at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.  The start time has been moved up three hours as of Friday afternoon from the originally scheduled 1:00 pm start.
