Pios Snag First MAAC Win Against Mount Saint Mary's

Newman led SHU at the plate with three hits

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Sacred Heart University baseball team defeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Mount Saint Mary's in game two of its weekend series on Saturday, 14-6. Steak Newman led the Pios at the plate with three hits, four RBIs and a home-run.

How it Happened:
The Pios came back after yesterday's loss starting off strong in the first. Gavin Donohue made contact first with a base hit. Dante D'Amore then doubled to advance G. Donohue to third. With two outs and runners in scoring position, JW Fitzgerald singled to plate G. Donohue.
 
The Mountaineers responded with a solo home run in the second to tie things at one.
 
D'Amore secured his second hit and second double of the day as the lead-off man in the third. With bases loaded and no outs, Zack Kovalchik reached on an error as the third baseman made an impressive stop but overthrew to home as D'Amore and Steak Newman scored for the 3-1 lead.
 
The Pios showed veteran status at the plate in the fourth as Joe Cilea got things started as the nine-hole hitter with a base hit. SHU worked five walks to plate three runs to take a 6-2 lead.
 
Mount Saint Mary's responded in the fourth with two runs. The Mountaineers worked the bags as they scored on a passed ball and stole home on a throw down at second.
 
The Pios scoring streak continued in the fifth as G. Donohue hit an RBI double down the left side to plate Ungar. With two outs, Newman singled to score G. Donohue.
 
SHU tacked on two more in the sixth on a Mountaineer throwing error.
 
With bases loaded and one out in the seventh, Ronan Donohue secured an RBI single as D'Amore scored his second run. Zack Kovalchik plated Newman as he reached first on a fielder's choice for the 12-6 lead.
 
Newman sealed the deal for the Pios with a two-run home run in the top of the ninth for the 14-6 win.
 
The Pioneers face Mount Saint Mary's in the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m.
