Saint Anselm Visits Wednesday for NEWHA Semifinal

Winner advances to Saturday’s championship game

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart women's hockey team looked strong at Martire Family Arena in its two-game sweep of Assumption in the NEWHA Tournament quarterfinal series over the weekend. And thanks to Post's upset of Franklin Pierce, the Pioneers, the No. 3 seed, will be back on their home ice for Wednesday's single elimination semifinal game against fifth-seeded Saint Anselm. The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game can be viewed on ESPN+ 
 
OF NOTE: 
 
• SHU (19-14-3) has won four straight games at Martire and five of its last six. Sacred Heart is 11-6-2 on home ice this season. 
 
• The Pioneers have advanced to the NEWHA semifinals for the first time since 2022 when they fell to Franklin Pierce 2-0 
 
• Sacred Heart is playing Saint Anselm in the NEWHA Tournament for only the second time. The Pioneers beat the Hawks 3-1 in the 2018 championship game in Manchester, N.H. 
 
• The Pioneers and Hawks met four times in the regular season. The two games at Martire were back in October – a 4-3 Saint Anselm victory in the first NEWHA game of the season followed by a 4-0 SHU victory the next day. Sacred Heart won the first game in Manchester, 3-2, in early January. The second game was a 2-2 tie with the Hawks winning the shootout. 
 
Sydney Antonakis scored three goals in the four games against Saint Anselm. Isabella Chaput added two goals and four assists. Ella Holm also scored two goals. Goalie Carly Greene played 68:33 in two games against the Hawks, including making 45 saves in a 4-0 shutout on Oct. 12. Lauren Larson played both games in Manchester and had a 1.92 GAA. 
 
• The Pioneers are second in the NEWHA in scoring defense (1.76 GAA), while Saint Anselm is seventh (3.09). The Hawks are the second highest scoring team at 2.30 (GPG), while Sacred Heart is fourth in scoring at 2.08. 
 
• Greene leads the nation in save percentage (.956) and is third in goals against average (1.31). 
 
• The Pioneers are third in the nation with 10 shutouts. Wisconsin and Quinnipiac share the national lead with 12 
 
SHU NEWHA TOURNAMENT HISTORY 
 
The Pioneers' last NEWHA Tournament championship came in the very first tournament in 2017-18 when they defeated Post, Holy Cross and Saint Anselm in the championship game. Sacred Heart's all-time NEWHA Tournament record is 7-7. 
 
ON SAINT ANSELM 
 
The Hawks (12-18-7, 10-11-7 NEWHA) advanced to the semifinals after defeating Stonehill in a grueling three-games. Stonehill won Game 1 in double overtime. The Hawks rallied to win the second game 4-3 and then scored two third-period goals to win the deciding game 4-2. Tyra Turner Saint Anselm in points with 26 so far this season. Gracee Donovan currently leads the team in goals with 16 on the campaign while Turner has the team lead in assists with 14. Brooklyn Schneiderhan sits second on the team in points with 23. In goal, Ava Hills has earned a majority of the starts, suiting up 19 times this season. She currently holds a 2.78 goals-against average and .937 save percentage with a 6-9-4 record. The Hawks' goalies have combined to make 1,447 saves, which is the most of any team in the nation. Sam Ftorek is in his first season as the head coach at Saint Anselm.
