POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (December 9, 2024) – The Sacred Heart University women's fencing team wrapped up the first half of its season on Sunday, at the SHU Tradition Meet, hosted this year by Vassar, at the Walker Field House. Three different Pioneers recorded at least 10 wins on the day, as junior
Valery Krylova (Shelton, Conn.) went 13-5 in the sabre, while senior
Maria Alvim (Lisbon, Portugal) and junior
Nadia Gaberkorn (Marlboro, N.J.) were 12-2 and 11-5 in the epee, respectively.
It was the epee squad which picked up the most points on the day for SHU, with a 30-24 (.556) record, while sabre had the highest winning percentage, at 21-15 (.583). The foil team finished the day at 13-23 (.361).
In addition to the aforementioned trio of fencers, senior
Jenna Jacinto (Dix Hills, N.Y.) in the foil and first year
Jessica Murphy (Lincoln Park, N.J.) each collected eight wins. Both finished 8-10 in their respective discipline.
As a team, the Pioneers finished 1-5 on the day, with a 16-11 win over NJIT in the third contest of the meet. Sacred Heart suffered single-point, 14-13 defeats at the hands of both host Vassar and LIU. SHU was also defeated by NYU (18-9), Tempe (23-4) and Princeton (17-8).
The Pioneers are back in action on the other side of the semester break, when they travel to the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, Jan. 18, for the Philadelphia Invitational.
