Maria Alvim wrapped up her outstanding season by competing at the NCAA Fencing Championship, hosted by Penn State. Alvim won seven bouts over her two days of competition in epee, placing 21st overall.
Her performance earned Sacred Heart seven points, which placed the Pioneers 27th of the 33 teams that had NCAA qualifiers.
Alvim, who earned honorable mention All-Region recognition, enjoyed a stellar season. She posted a top 20 finish at the NCAA Regionals two weeks ago, in February fenced at the Senior World Cup in Barcelona Spain, and in November finished 18-1 to take first place in epee at the NFC Championship, earning First Team All-Conference honors.
Alvim was one of 144 fencers to qualify for the NCAA Championship.
Notre Dame captured the national championship, finishing 11 points ahead of second-place Columbia.
