Pios Draw with Mount Saint Mary's on the Road

SHU picks up its first tie of the season

Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team drew a 2-2 tie with Mount Saint Mary's on the road in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers scored a pair of goals in the first half from two different goal scorers and picked up their first tie of the season.

Sacred Heart: 6-3-1 (1-1-1 MAAC)
Mount Saint Mary's: 2-6-3 (2-0-1 MAAC)

Of Note:
The Pioneers got off to a hot start, scoring the first goal of the game in the second minute to take an early 1-0 lead. Javier Lopez Cayuela received a cross in the box, took a touch to beat his defender, and was able to push the ball past the Mount goalkeeper for his second goal of the season. 

Sacred Heart ended the half with momentum as David Garcia Gallego scored his fourth goal of the season in the 45th minute. Gallego had control of the ball in the box and fired away to the top right corner of the goal to put the Pioneers ahead 2-0 at the half. SHU outshot Mount 6-3 in the first. 

Mount Saint Mary's scored twice in the second half in the 53rd and 75th minute to tie the game at 2-2. The Mountaineers outshot the Pioneers in the second half 6-3.

Graduate goalkeeper Andrew Hammersley made four saves for the Pioneers. 

Overall, the two teams had nine shots each, Mount had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks, but SHU had a 4-3 advantage in saves.
