Strong Second Half Sends Pioneers Past Seahawks

SHU won its second consecutive game

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—The Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team used a strong second half to win its second consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game, 13-9 on the road at Wagner on Saturday afternoon. Senior Carson Spooner scored three goals to lead the Pioneers.

Of Note:
After trailing 7-5 at halftime, Sacred Heart had a dominant second half to come from behind to take the win over the Seahawks.

To open the third quarter, Sacred Heart tallied four consecutive goals to take a 9-7 lead. Wagner snuck one in with two seconds left in the quarter to bring the Seahawks within one, 9-8, heading into the fourth.

The Pioneers scored three straight goals, taking a 12-8 lead. Wagner added one more with 2:25 left, but SHU answered with the final goal of the game, to secure the 13-9 final.

To open the game, Wagner got on the board first, but SHU answered with back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead. Wagner went on to score two more to close out the first quarter with a slight 3-2 edge.

Michael Moreschi put one away to start the second quarter to tie it at 3-3. Wagner added one more at 11:48, but Miccio answered for the Pioneers to tie it again, 4-4. Wagner went on to extend its lead by three, 7-4, but Spooner scored his first of the day to cut the Pioneers deficit, 7-5 at the half.

Nicky Casano had 14 faceoff wins for the Pioneers. Sacred Heart also had a 27-20 advantage in shots on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Alex Pazienza made 11 saves in the win for the Pioneers.
