STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon, the Sacred Heart University softball team came out on the wrong end of two low-scoring contests in a Northeast Conference doubleheader at Wagner. The Seahawks took game one 3-1 before coming out on top 1-0 in the nightcap.
Team Records
Sacred Heart (17-24, 8-10 NEC)
Wagner (13-24, 9-9 NEC)
Game 1: Wagner 3, SHU 1
Pitchers:
Emily Heath (SHU) - (L, 5.0 innings pitched, 3 earned runs, 5-4 record)
Liv Vadas (SHU) - (1.0 innings pitched, 0 earned runs)
Eve Harvey (WC) - (W, 7.0 innings pitched, 1 earned run, 5 strikeouts, 11-12 record)
Top Performers:
Amy Petrovich (SHU) – 3-4
Emily Carroll (SHU) – 3-3
Jenna Mowad (SHU) – 2-3, 1 run, 1 walk, 1 double
Of Note:
The first two innings stood scoreless despite featuring five combined baserunners from both teams. The two starting pitchers left all runners stranded in the opening two frames, with the game's first run coming in the third.
The top of the Pios' order plated the game's first run on a
Carly Koltko sacrifice fly to left field in the third inning. The sophomore stepped to the plate with runners on the corners after a
Jenna Mowad walk and an
Amy Petrovich single.
Unfortunately for SHU, Wagner answered by scoring one run in each of the next three innings to take a 3-1 advantage.
The Pioneers had more chances to put runs on the scoreboard, as they had at least one base runner on in every inning of game one. However, Wagner's starter Eve Harvey had other ideas, working out of every jam to earn the victory.
Sacred Heart also received a stellar performance from its starter,
Emily Heath. Heath threw 5.0 innings and allowed three earned.
Liv Vadas pitched the sixth and didn't allow a run.
Game 2: Wagner 1, SHU 0
Pitchers:
Liv Vadas (SHU) - (L, 2.0 innings pitched, 1 earned run, 3-7 record)
Sam Kowalski (SHU) - (4.0 innings pitched, 0 earned runs, 5 strikeouts)
Eve Harvey (WC) - (W, 7.0 innings pitched, 0 earned run, 8 strikeouts, 12-12 record)
Top Performers:
Jenna Mowad (SHU) – 1-2
Henke, Nicole (SHU) – 1-3, 1 stolen base
Of Note:
Game two was a classic pitchers' duel, as no runs were scored after the Seahawks' first batter of the contest. Wagner's Bianca Worthy kicked off the home half of the first with a leadoff homer to right field. Worthy's home run was the game's lone score as the Seahawks held on for a 1-0 win.
From that point, both pitching staffs excelled.
Liv Vadas started for SHU, went 2.0 innings, and allowed two hits and the one earned run.
Sam Kowalski entered in relief and ceded one hit and no walks with five strikeouts. The first year retired 12 of the 14 batters she faced, retiring the side in the third, fourth, and sixth frames.
Unfortunately for the Pioneers, Harvey was outstanding for the Seahawks over the whole three-game series, throwing every pitch for Wagner. The grad student threw a complete-game shutout in game three with eight strikeouts.

SHU will return to the field on Wednesday, Apr. 26, for a 3 p.m. bout at Fairfield.
