LAST TIME OUT
The Pios suffered a hard-fought 5-3 setback to Fairfield on Thursday afternoon at Pioneer Park. Despite taking the loss, SHU outhit the Stags 9-8. Fairfield scored three runs in the game's first two innings, icing the contest with insurance runs in both the fifth and sixth frames. The Pioneers did all their damage in the bottom of the second inning, tying the game at 3-3 after two. A walk and a single put two on with one out for
Victoria LoPinto, who sent a single through the right side for Sacred Heart's first run of the afternoon.
Jenna Mowad stepped up next and tallied an RBI single of her own to make it a 3-2 game before an error by the opposing centerfielder brought the third run home. Unfortunately for the Pios, the Fairfield pitchers settled in after the second to keep the home team off the scoreboard for the rest of the game.
A LOOK AT THE PIOS
The Pioneers have played twice this week, splitting the two games against Iona and Fairfield. SHU kicked off the week with a convincing 5-1 victory at Iona on Tuesday that saw the Pios tally 10 hits with home runs from Mowad and
Alyssa Gonzalez. In the circle, first year
Emily Heath went all 7.0 innings and allowed just one earned run on five hits on the way to her second collegiate win. The Pioneers then suffered the aforementioned setback to the Stags on Thursday despite holding the hitting advantage. Mowad and
Emily Carroll have led the Pio offense over these two contests, as both hit .571 (4-for-7) with two RBI. Mowad has also scored a team-high three runs and had a homer against the Gaels.
SCOUTING FDU
The Knights enter this weekend's series with an 8-14 overall record and a 0-3 mark in the NEC. FDU was swept in its first NEC series of the season, dropping three games on the road at LIU. The first two contests shared an identical final score of 3-2, while the Sharks took game three by a 7-1 margin. The Knights most recently took a break from league play for a doubleheader against intrastate foe Saint Peter's on Wednesday, March 22, splitting the twin bill after winning game two 3-1. The duo of Alayna Savaglio and Julia Swan have led the way for the Knights in the circle, as Savaglio owns a 2.56 ERA to just edge Swan's mark of 3.04. Savaglio and Swan have recorded seven of the team's eight wins. At the plate, Courtney Mahoney has served as one of the team's best hitters, leading FDU in RBI (14), runs (9), doubles (4), and homers (2) while hitting at a .281 clip.
UP NEXT
The Pioneers will be back at Pioneer Park on Wednesday, March 29, for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Siena.
