TRUMBULL, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's tennis team fell in a tight 4-3 decision against Rhode Island on Sunday night.
The Pioneers drop to 4-6 on the season while URI grows to 4-2.
The Rams took the doubles point as they won two of the three matches.
Aina Garriga and
Flavia Rambaldi grabbed the lone double win at the third spot with a convincing 6-3 mark.
Kim Fenton and
Olivia Kharkover fought in second doubles but fell in the tiebreaker to give URI the edge.
On two occasions during singles play, the Pioneers were at match point and had a chance to clinch the team win. In second and third singles, O'Toole and Garriga forced a third set after falling in set one. Both Pioneers fell, 7-5, in the final set.
Katsiaryna Starastsenka,
Vitalina Golod and Rambaldi were all victorious in their singles competitions. Starastsenka won in straight sets, 6-3 & 6-4, while Golod and Rambaldi outlasted their opponents in three sets.
Sacred Heart kicks off Northeast Conference play on Friday when it hosts Long Island at 11 a.m.
