TRUMBULL, Conn. – In its first match of Northeast Conference play, the Sacred Heart University women's tennis team fell to Long Island, 6-1, on Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers fall to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play while the Sharks grew to 3-2 and 2-1.
SHU's lone point came from edging LIU in doubles play.
Katsiaryna Starastsenka and
Ciara O'Toole won first doubles, 6-2, followed by a 6-4 decision in third doubles from Viatlina Golod and
Renee Sharma.
In singles play, five of the six Pioneers feel in straight sets. Ana Sofia Angeles-Sanchez dropped the first set, 6-2, but prevailed in the second, 6-4, to force a third set. LIU's Kate Jorjoliani outlasted the first-year, 6-1, to close out the match.
The Pioneers are back in action on Sunday at Merrimack.
