Box Score SHELTON, Conn. — The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team won its first game of the season in its first a conference game of the year on Tuesday afternoon at the Sports Center of Connecticut. Six different Pioneers hit the back of the net, including Paige McNeil with two goals in a 7-1 win over Post University in NEWHA play.
Sacred Heart scored three goals in each of the first two periods and one in the final frame while outshooting the home team, 41-13.
SHU got on the board just three minutes into the game, but Post answered nine seconds later. Iyla Ryskamp provided the eventual game-winning goal at the 10:48 mark. It was the first goal of her collegiate career.
In addition to McNeil and Ryskamp, Kelly Solak, Sophie Lupone, Nicole Bessinger, and Sydney Antonakis all produced goals. Twelve different Pioneers picked up at least one point, with Nicole Guidi leading the charge with three assists.
Goaltender Molly Elmore gave up the lone first period goal and then proceeded to stop the next 12 shots to collect her first victory net.
"I thought we played a good overall game, there's definitely areas where we can improve," SHU head coach Tom O'Malley said. "We're going to need that going forward with the season here; overall I am really happy with the effort we put out there today."
The Pioneers are back in NEWHA action Friday at 2 p.m. as they will host LIU in Shelton.
