MADISIN, NJ — The Sacred Heart University women's fencing program went undefeated, 4-0, in the first matchup of the season at Drew University on Saturday. Along with the spotless record, junior Tia Petrides (10-0, foil) and sophomore Sophie Witek (12-0, sabre) went undefeated in their respective events.
Round 1:
- The Pioneers lost in both the epee (4-5) and sabre (4-5) events but garnered an overall win by dominating in the foil (7-2).
- Petrides won all three head-to-heads in the foil event.
- Witek (5-0) shutout her opponent in the sabre.
Round 2:
- Ashley Cherry (3-5, 5-0, 5-4) won two of her three matchups in the epee, but the Pioneers lost by one point (4-5).
- SHU dominated in the foil with a 7-2 record to edge the team to another round victory over Drew.
- Witek went 3-3 in the foil, but the team lost 4-5.
Round 3:
- Cherry (5-0, 5-0) and first-year Grace Hand (5-0) delivered three shutouts for an overall epee victory of 6-3.
- Sacred Heart fell 5-4 in the foil but won the sabre event 5-4.
Round 4:
- SHU garnered a win in both the epee (6-3) and foil (6-3) but fell short in the sabre event despite Witek's two shutouts (5-0, 5-0) out of three head-to-heads.
Due to the incoming storm, the team has decided to postpone its meet at LIU on Sunday, Feb. 7. No new date has been set yet. The team travels to Drew University for their second matchup of the season on February 21.
