TRUMBULL, Conn. — The Sacred Heart University women's tennis program opens its spring campaign with a narrow 4-3 loss at home against Stony Brook on Friday. The team was slated to play the University of Rhode Island with home-court advantage on Valentine's Day, but the meet was postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test result.
First-year Katsiaryna Starastsenka won in her singles competition against the Seawolves Kristine Theys in the final match. The Belarus native alongside graduate Brianne Lauria defeated Sasha Bekirova and Kristine Theys in doubles.
Sophomore Vitalina Golod was the only other Pioneer to come out on top in singles against Stony Brook's Jamie Wei.
SHU dominated the doubles competition, winning two of its three games. Senior Lauren Santarisiero and first-year Flavia Rambaldi toppled SBU's Nolwen Cardoso and Loreto Rubio 7-5.
The team has the weekend to prepare for their next home campaign against conference rival Fairleigh Dickinson, who is 0-2, on Monday at 10:00 a.m.
