Box Score SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. — Paige McNeil ignited the slapshots for the Sacred University women's ice hockey team two minutes into the opening period against Saint Michael's College on Friday. The Pioneers shutout the NEWHA opponent, 10-0, in the first matchup of the two-game series.
Off a rebounded shot at 2:06 in the first period, McNeil drilled in the eventual game-winning goal off the stick of
Nicole Guidi and
Katie Keenan.
Less than a minute later,
Nicole Bessinger had the breakaway advantage to give the Red & White a 2-0 cushion with help from
Charlotte Huntington and
Adrianna Kobyleckyj.
The first period goals did not stop there as
Cassandra Nevers tallied yet another Pioneer goal 40 seconds later with the assist from
Sophie Lupone.
Anna Klein scored her first of the night off an unassisted shot from the blue line. The co-captain dominated offensively with two more goals in the second to extend SHU's lead, 8-0.
McNeil would score again in the first, followed by her last goal in the third.
For her first goal of the season,
Charlotte Huntington topped off the scoring with 10 minutes remaining in the third period sent her way by Bessinger.
First-year Bessinger, Klein and McNeil led the team with three assists. For the first time in her career, McNeil Recorded a hat trick while Klein garnered her second as a Pioneer.
Frankie Sanchez had a successful night with a perfect save percentage and caught 25 Purple Knight pucks.
Sacred Heart rematches SMC at 4 p.m. on Saturday before hosting Post on November 23 at 1:30 p.m.
