Softball Splits Final Games At Spring Games

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla.–  The Sacred Heart University softball team closed out its first weekend in the Sunshine State of Florida by splitting two games at the Madeira Beach Spring Games on Sunday falling to Middle Tennessee State, 17-2, in six innings and bouncing right back to trounce St. Bonaventure, 17-1, in five innings to close out the day.  The Pioneers, who are now 3-6 on the season, will now take Monday off before returning to the diamond on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. for a doubleheader at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Middle Tennessee State University Blue Raiders (12-10 overall, 0-0 C-USA)

 

The Scoring

· Trailing 4-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, Sacred Heart would score its only runs in Sunday's opener on a two-run homer to left by sophomore Caroline Kruger, her first home of the season.

· The Blue Raiders would then plate four runs in the fifth and nine runs in the top of the sixth inning to close out the game.

In The Circle

· Olivia Vadas started for the Pioneers and took the loss to even her season record at 1-1.  Vadas worked 4.0 innings in which she allowed six hits, seven runs (all earned) with five walks and four strikeouts.

. Colleen Walsh and Carlie Williams each worked one inning of relief to finish the game for SHU.

· Starter Kailey Ahlstrom worked five innings to pick up the win for MTSU to up her season record to 4-2.  Ahlstrom allowed five hits, two runs (both earned) with three strikeouts and two walks,

By The Numbers

· Middle Tennessee outhit the Pioneers, 15-5, in the game.

· Caroline Kruger had one more hit to go along with her big fly to finish game one of the day going 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs batted in a run scored.

· Stephanie Mangiameli, Alyssa Gonzalez and Katelyn Christian had Pioneers' other safeties versus the Blue Raiders.

· Summer Burgess with four runs batted in and Jocelynn De La Cruz with three RBI led the Middle Tennessee offense on Sunday.

The Scoring

· The Pioneers got on the board quickly scoring a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Katelyn Christian.

· After the Bonnies tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first, Sacred Heart would then score 16 unanswered tallies in the next three innings to earn the victory.  In the second inning, right fielder Myah Eldred had an RBI ground out and Lindsey Spitz scored when Stephanie Mangiameli reached on an error.

· In the third, Sacred Heart plated a season-high for a single inning eight runs on an RBI ground out by Kira Ferraiolo, a sacrifice fly by Lindsey Spitz, an error by St. Bonaventure, an Amy Petrovich single, a passed ball, an Alyssa Gonzalez single and a two-run home run by Katelyn Christian.

  · Sacred Heart would wrap up its scoring for the day with six runs in fourth inning RBI singles by Kylee Harvey and another by Amy Petrovich and a grand slam home run by Alyssa Gonzalez, her team-leading third dinger of 2020.

In The Circle

· Junior Shyanne Fennell picked up her first win of the season with a complete game performance to move her season record to 1-4.  Shyanne allowed only two hits over five innings, with one run (earned) and four strikeouts plus two walks.

· The Bonnies used three pitchers in the game with starter Ally Haskell taking the loss, as she worked 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits, nine runs (five earned) with one strikeout and three walks.

By The Numbers

· The 17 runs scored and 13 hits amassed by the Pioneers versus St. Bonaventure are season highs.

· Alyssa Gonzalez went 3-for-4 at the plate with five runs batted in and two runs scored for the winners.  Along with her team-high three home runs, Alyssa leads Sacred Heart with nine RBI.

· Katelyn Christian also had three hits in the game and finished with three runs batted in in four plate appearances with two runs scored. 
· Maighread Scafariello and Amy Petrovich also had multi-hit outings for Sacred Heart, as the each had two hits.  Scafariello and Myah Eldred also each scored three runs on the day.
