Box Score SHELTON, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Ice Hockey team hit the 10 game win streak mark this afternoon as the Pioneers defeated Saint Anselm 4-1. With the win, the Pioneers clinched the NEWHA Regular Season Title for the first-time in program history. SHU looks for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon when SHU hosts the Hawks at 2:30 p.m. Tomorrow, the Pioneers will honor their senior's as well.
First Period
- The Pioneers outshot the Hawks 11-8 in the period.
- Saint Anselm got on the board first courtesy of a goal by Mackenzie Kaasa just 2:32 into the period to put Saint Anselm ahead 1-0.
- But the Pioneers answered right back as first-year Alexa Ocel nailed her fifth goal of the year off an assist by sophomore Kennedy Spiering to even the score at 1-1 just 8:44 into the first period.
- After the Ocel goal both sides skated to a standstill to end the period with the score remaining tied up at 1-1.
Second Period
- The Pioneers continued the offensive attack in the second period as SHU outshot Saint Anselm 14-10 in the period.
- The period was all about the Pioneers as SHU tallied two goals in the period first coming off the stick off the stick off senior Jayne Lewis from a pass by Alexa Ocel 16:57 into the period to put the Pioneers ahead 2-1.
- Then in the closing minutes of the period 18:32 into the period, Lewis cashed in her second goal of the game this time on the SHU power-play to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead heading into the third period.
Third Period
- The Pioneers outshot the Hawks 11-9 in the period.
- Both sides fought a strong defensive battle for the majority of the period as neither side found the back of the net in period until the final minute.
- With the goalie out of the net, the Pioneers sealed the win with an empty net goal courtesy of senior Olivia Bryant to give the Pioneers the 4-1 victory.
Notes
- The Pioneers improve to 18-10 on the year while Saint Anselm falls to 13-11-3 on the year.
- Senior Jayne Lewis led the way with two goals for two points.
- First-year Alexa Ocel also had a two point day with a goal and a assist.
- Sophomore goalie Frankie Sanchez tallied 26 saves on 27 shots faced to pick up her 17th win of the year.
