Box Score WEST POINT, N.Y.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team tied Army West Point in traditional overtime by a final score of 3-3. Army then took the victory in the penalty shootout in the third round. The Pioneers conclude the regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 26 when SHU hosts AIC. Puck-drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
First Period
- Army outshot the Pioneers in the opening period 18-9.
- Army jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as just 3:31 into the period, Dominic Franco found the back of the net to give the Black Knights the early one goal advantage.
- Then just two minutes later, Army struck again with a goal coming off the stick of Patrick Smyth at 5:39 into the period to put the Black Knights ahead 2-0.
- SHU did answer right back as less than minute later 6:30 into the period senior Mike Lee cashed in his fifth goal of the year off a pair of assists by first-year Jeppe Urup and sophomore Austin Magera to narrow the Army lead to 2-1 heading into the second period.
Second Period
- The Pioneers outshot the Black Knights 10-8 in the period.
- SHU dominated the faceoff wins as the Pioneers took 14 faceoffs while Army took nine.
- A goal on both sides was waved off keeping the score at 2-1 in favor of Army until 16:51 into the period off the stick of Mason Kruger to send Army into the third period with a 3-1 lead.
Third Period
- The Pioneers dominated the third period in shots on goal as SHU outshot Army 11-4.
- The Pioneers made a comeback as junior Marc Johnstone fired off his sixth goal of the year off an assist by sophomore Ryan Steele just 1:26 into the period to tighten the Army lead to 3-2.
- Then six minutes later, junior Max Luukko nailed his second goal of the year off a duo of assists by Steele and senior Austin McIlmurray to even the score at 3-3 7:09 into the period.
- Both sides then skated to a standstill as the game headed into overtime.
Overtime
- Neither side scored in the first regular overtime period which resulted in both teams picking up a point in the Atlantic Hockey standings as both sides attempted two shots on goal.
- Neither side was able to find the back of the net in the 3x3 second OT period sending the game into an overtime shootout.
- In the shootout in the first round both sides were resisted by the goalies then senior Mike Lee scored the first goal of the shootout as he fired off a goal passed the netminder. Army answered with a shootout goal and sealed the shootout victory in the third round with another goal.
